Arlette grew up studying how to capture movement and form in dance and music. Many years of practice taught her how to appreciate and recreate the beauty of alignment and composition. She trained to harness her creativity to express herself by drawing, painting, weaving, knitting, photographing, filming, throwing (pots!), sewing, and basically anything an art student could get their hands on!
Her nomadic childhood brought her around museums, galleries, and antique markets around the world. However, she was grounded by the influences of her Peranakan ancestry. Acquired heirloom pieces of antique jewelry schooled her to appreciate beautifully handcrafted pieces from a bygone era (be it antique Belgian or Irish lace, Lalique art nouveau lamps, or Tiffany art deco time pieces, to name a few).
It was when she chanced upon a course in Couture Design & Techniques while studying fashion at Parsons School of Design that she got hooked on the processes of all handmade fashion. Over the years, she continually delves into hard-to-source, brown-leafed antique patterns, all thanks to being privy to Parsons' extensive archives.
